Tigers won’t start Max Scherzer in ALDS Game 4

The Tigers are facing elimination Sunday in Game 3 of their ALDS matchup with the Orioles and they’ll be facing elimination again on Monday if they force a Game 4. But that won’t alter the four-man rotation that Detroit manager Brad Ausmus announced before the best-of-five Division Series began.

Ausmus confirmed to Chris Iott of MLive.com on Sunday afternoon that Rick Porcello is going to remain the scheduled Game 4 starter no matter what. Max Scherzer may be available in emergency relief, but the impending free agent right-hander is not going to be asked to pitch more than a couple of innings on short rest.

Porcello had good overall numbers this year, but he went 0-4 with a 6.20 ERA in five September outings. The Tigers need him to rediscover his midsummer groove if they survive Sunday’s Game 3 behind David Price.
