Benches cleared in Game 1 of the NLDS between the Cardinals and Dodgers yesterday after Adam Wainwright hit Yasiel Puig with a pitch. Things escalated when Adrian Gonzalez walked to the plate and began jawing with Yadier Molina. The two went nose-to-nose before eventually being separated.
Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch got Molina’s take on the incident after the game. He admitted that he lost his composure before Cardinals manager Mike Matheny stepped in, but he also appeared prepared to fight Gonzalez if it came down to it.
“I was hot. He knows me well. At that time I wasn’t thinking,” Molina said. Gonzalez “was screaming at me. I told him, ‘If you’re going to scream at me you’ve got to be ready to fight.’ I don’t let anybody talk to me that way.”
The tension between these clubs dates back to last year’s NLCS and it’s not showing any signs of slowing down. It’s worth noting that Molina shoved home plate umpire Jerry Meals aside during the confrontation with Gonzalez. Fortunately for him, Meals didn’t lose his cool, too.
Here’s more from Gonzalez and Molina after the game:
