The Mets reassigned hitting coach Lamar Johnson and assistant hitting coach Luis Natera earlier this week, leading to continued speculation that Wally Backman could join the coaching staff in some capacity next season. But it’s not going to happen.
According to Matt Ehalt and Bob Klapisch of the Bergen Record, Backman will not be promoted to the major league staff in 2015. He has been offered the opportunity to manage the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas once again, but it’s unclear whether he will return.
Backman has managed Triple-A Las Vegas for the past three seasons and was recently named the 2014 PCL Manager of the Year. Despite his success in the minors, he’s still looking for his first major league coaching opportunity.
