Fired by the Twins, Ron Gardenhire wants to manage again

In a rarity for a fired manager Ron Gardenhire attended the press conference announcing his dismissal this afternoon and was in good spirits while answering questions from the local media, even cracking a few smiles.

The general vibe was that Gardenhire and general manager Terry Ryan agreed it was time for a change after 13 seasons, the last four of which have involved 90 or more losses each year.

Gardenhire also made it clear that he intends to manage again, although in the meantime the Twins have offered him an undisclosed role in the organization.

Things fell apart for Gardenhire in Minnesota and there was plenty to criticize even when things were going well, but it’s hard to imagine him not being able to land another big-league job relatively soon considering he finished runner-up in the Manager of the Year balloting in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2009 before finally winning the award in 2010.

Gardenhire will be paid by the Twins in 2015 as part of a two-year contract signed exactly one year ago tomorrow.
