Prior to this afternoon’s game against the Blue Jays, the Orioles designated pitcher Preston Guilmet for assignment and purchased the contract of infielder Alexi Casilla, Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun reported. Casilla started at third base and batted lead-off. He is auditioning for a spot on the Orioles’ post-season roster.
The Orioles picked up Casilla as a free agent back in January. He has spent most of his season at Triple-A Norfolk and missed time between the end of June and mid-August after breaking the hamate bone in his right wrist. In 125 plate appearances in the major leagues this season entering Saturday’s game, Casilla hit .214/.268/.295 with 10 RBI and nine stolen bases.
Guilmet, 27, has been up and down between Triple-A and the majors this season for the Orioles, but only logged 10 1/3 innings in the big leagues. Despite a good K/BB ratio, at 12/2, he gave up six runs including two home runs.
