Earlier this month Royals manager Ned Yost talked about how disappointed he was that more fans weren’t coming to games with the team finally in contention, but here’s the thing: Kansas City has faded down the stretch, going 10-13 since his misguided comments, yet the fans kept coming to the ballpark.
In fact, yesterday the Royals finished the home portion of their season with an attendance of 1,956,482 for their highest total since 1991.
During the 22 years in between the Royals had a grand total of three winning seasons, with a high of 84 wins, and never made the playoffs. Right now they’re 84-70 and fighting for the playoff lives.
Considering all that Royals fans have been through for the past couple decades–some of it inflicted by Yost and his teams–I’d say their attendance was pretty impressive this season.
