Astros shut down George Springer for the season

As of last weekend rookie slugger George Springer had hoped to return from a quadriceps injury to play again this season, but the Astros announced today that he’ll shut things down until 2015.

Springer followed up his slow start by homering 20 times in a 59-game span, but the 24-year-old outfielder last played on July 19.

Springer finishes with a .231 batting average and 114 strikeouts in 78 games, which are certainly sizable flaws that could hinder his development, but he also had 20 homers and 39 walks for an .804 OPS that ranks 19th among the 95 outfielders with at least 300 plate appearances this season.
