David Phelps returns to the Yankees as a reliever

David Phelps was a full-time member of the Yankees’ rotation when he went down with an elbow injury in early August, but today he returned from the disabled list as a reliever.

Shifting to the bullpen allows Phelps to get back to the majors without having to build up his arm strength quite as much and he does have previous relief experience, posting a 3.60 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 75 career innings out of the bullpen.

Assuming no setbacks with his elbow Phelps seems like a decent bet to rejoin the Yankees’ rotation next season, but for now he’ll probably get some low-leverage relief work down the stretch.
