Red Sox may shut down Dustin Pedroia for the season

Dustin Pedroia returned last week from a concussion, but now he’s dealing with a left wrist injury and Alex Speier of reports that the Red Sox may decide to shut the second baseman down for the rest of the season.

According to manager John Farrell an MRI exam showed inflammation and he’ll be examined further to determine if surgery is needed. It’s a problem he’s been playing through for most of the season.

Pedroia has hit a career-low .278 with seven homers and a career-worst .712 OPS in 135 games after posting an OPS above .780 in each of his first seven full seasons. He’s owed another $97 million through 2021 as part of a contract extension signed last July.
