Henderson Alvarez set to return quickly from oblique injury

Marlins right-hander Henderson Alvarez exited his September 1 start with a strained oblique muscle, which seemed likely to knock him out for most and perhaps all of the season’s final month, but he’s already been cleared to return.

Marlins manager Mike Redmond told Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald that he’s “optimistic” Alvarez will be able to start Friday against the Phillies, which would mean missing just one turn in the rotation due to an injury that often sidelines players for a month or more.

Alvarez was previously on the disabled list last month with shoulder inflammation and was limited to just 17 starts last year, but he’s been fantastic all season with a 2.88 ERA and league-leading three complete-game shutouts in 26 starts.
