Melky Cabrera will have season-ending surgery on broken pinkie finger

Blue Jays outfielder Melky Cabrera suffered a broken pinkie finger sliding back into first base when Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez made a snap throw to first base in the third inning of tonight’s game at Fenway Park. Cabrera was tagged for the final out of the inning. Cabrera stayed in the game, but was pinch-hit for by Anthony Gose to lead off the sixth inning. Cabrera had fallen behind 0-2 after fouling off a pitch and appeared to be in considerable pain.

Brendan Kennedy of the Toronto Star reports that Cabrera will undergo season-ending surgery to fix the broken finger. It’s a big loss for the Blue Jays, who are still within striking distance for either of the two American League Wild Card slots.

Cabrera finished the night with a single and a walk in his only two plate appearances. He ends the season with an impressive .301/.351/.458 slash line along with 16 home runs and 73 RBI — a nice bounce-back year after struggling in 2013.
