Joe Wieland is ready to return from Tommy John surgery

Padres right-hander Joe Wieland hasn’t pitched in a big-league game since May 6, 2012, when his rookie season was cut short after just five starts by an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery.

Multiple setbacks and 28 months later the 25-year-old former top prospect is finally ready to return and will rejoin the Padres’ rotation Saturday with a start against the Rockies at Coors Field.

Wieland made nine post-surgery starts while rehabbing in the minors, including four at Triple-A, posting a 3.03 ERA and 36/6 K/BB ratio in 39 innings overall.
