Rangers prospect Joey Gallo ties Kris Bryant with 40th homer

Joey Gallo smacked his 40th homer of the season Sunday at Double-A, which means the Rangers prospect is now tied with Cubs prospect Kris Bryant for the minor-league lead.

Gallo isn’t considered quite on Bryant’s level as a prospect, but the 2012 first-round draft pick ranked 60th on Baseball America’s list coming into the season and has upped his stock dramatically by hitting .281 with a .401 on-base percentage and .622 slugging percentage in 115 games between Single-A and Double-A.

However, at Double-A he’s hit just .244 with 99 strikeouts in 57 games–yes, 99 strikeouts in 57 games–which is why despite the massive power numbers both this season and last season there are still some big question marks about Gallo’s upside as a big leaguer.
