Padres designate Jeff Francoeur for assignment

In calling up prospect Rymer Liriano the Padres needed to create a spot on the roster and to do so they just designated for assignment veteran outfielder Jeff Francoeur.

Francoeur was called up last month when the Padres were trading away various regulars. He was an outfielder/pitcher at Triple-A, but appeared only as a position player with the Padres while hitting .083 with seven strikeouts in 24 at-bats.

Dating back to 2012 he’s hit a combined .222 with a .269 on-base percentage and .346 slugging percentage in 239 games for three different MLB teams and the 30-year-old wasn’t particularly productive at Triple-A considering the Pacific Coast League’s hitter-friendly environment.
