The Padres are nearing a decision on their next general manager

Padres manager Bud Black told MLB Network Radio today that he expects the team to name a new general manager within the next 48 hours.

As we noted yesterday, Yankees assistant general manager Billy Eppler is viewed as the front-runner,, but several others have been mentioned for the job, including Kim Ng and even Kevin Towers.

Now that the trading deadline is over and the Padres have unloaded most of what they need to unload, the urgency for a new GM isn’t quite what it was. But whoever gets the job has a big job ahead of them.

ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick reports that the Athletics and catcher Chris Herrmann have agreed to a contract. It’s a one-year deal worth $1 million with performance incentives, per Fancred’s Jon Heyman.

Herrmann, 31, spent last season with the Mariners, batting .237/.322/.421 with a pair of home runs and seven RBI in 87 plate appearances. He opened the season at Triple-A Tacoma, then was called up in late May. Herrmann battled an oblique injury during the season as well.

Herrmann figures to back up Josh Phegley behind the plate in 2019.
