The Marlins have released infielder Miguel Tejada, Juan C. Rodriguez of the Sun-Sentinel reports. Tejada signed a minor league contract with the club back in May, but was hampered by a shoulder injury.

In 14 plate appearances with Double-A Jacksonville, Tejada managed four singles and a double. The 40-year-old veteran says he plans to play winter ball in the Dominican Republic before deciding to continue playing professionally or retire.

Tejada emerged as one of the game’s best players in the early 2000’s, winning the AL MVP award with the Athletics in 2002. After leaving the A’s following the 2003 season, Tejada played for the Orioles, Astros, Padres, Giants, and Royals.
