Marlins interested in Jim Johnson (again)

Last month Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reported that the Marlins almost traded for A’s reliever Jim Johnson before instead swinging a deal for Pirates reliever Bryan Morris. But apparently Miami is still interested in Johnson.

Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald writes that the A’s have talked to the Marlins about trading Johnson and potentially getting back minor leaguer Adam Conley, a 2011 second-round draft pick with a 6.00 ERA at Triple-A.

Oakland’s move to acquire Johnson and his $10 million salary from Baltimore never made a ton of sense this offseason and it’s worked out much worse than expected, as he almost immediately lost the closer gig and has a 6.25 ERA with 23 walks in 40 innings.

He saved 50-plus games in both 2012 and 2013, so as bad as Johnson has looked this season he’s a reasonable enough buy-low bounceback target for the Marlins and perhaps a league switch could help him out with two months remaining until free agency.

MLB.com’s Jeffrey Flanagan reports that the Royals and outfielder Alex Gordon are “getting close” to an agreement on a one-year contract. Terms of the deal aren’t yet known, but the Royals could make it official within the next few days.

Gordon, who turns 36 years old next month, hit .266/.345/.396 with 13 home runs and 76 RBI over 633 plate appearances with the Royals this past season. His offense has waned, owning an adjusted OPS of 84 since 2016 (100 is average), but he still plays decent defense.

Gordon has spent all 13 years of his major league career with the Royals. With the club in a rebuilding phase, he will serve as the clubhouse leader and be a mentor to younger players on the roster.
