Play of the Day: Yasiel Puig recovers from misjudging a fly ball

Yoenis Cespedes isn’t the only outfielder who can turn a poor play in the outfield into a gem. Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig misread a Drew Stubbs fly ball to right field, coming in before dashing back and making a leaping grab. Wilin Rosario, who was on second, tagged up and scampered to third base, but Puig scrambled to his feet and fired a strike to Hanley Ramriez who made the toss to third base for the out.

Watch Puig’s catch and throw:

Despite the base running blunder, which happened after the Rockies nearly lost an 8-2 lead when the Dodgers scored five in the seventh, the Rockies were able to eke out an 8-7 win to halt a five-game losing streak. They have won only three of their last 19 games.

You can’t pick your family and no one knows that better than Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford. His sister Amy married Astros starter Gerrit Cole in November 2016, so the two players are brothers-in-law.

The two players have matched up against each other 18 times in the past, as Cole spent his first five seasons in the National League with the Pirates. Cole often won that battle, holding Crawford to four hits — all singles — in 18 plate appearances.

Crawford finally got the better of Cole on Tuesday night, hitting a line drive into the appropriately-named Crawford Boxes at Minute Maid Park for a two-run home run, cutting the Astros’ lead to 5-2.
