Hunter Pence to bat leadoff for the Giants

The Giants just got shut out for the third time in nine games. That has led Bruce Bochy to shake things up in the lineup. From Hank Schulman:

After the Giants fell to the Cardinals 2-0 Wednesday night, Bochy said he will drop Gregor Blanco from the leadoff spot and replace him with Hunter Pence, perhaps as soon as Thursday.

When Brandon Belt returns from nearly two months on the disabled list Friday he will bat second behind Pence.

I dig it. Blanco has an OBP of .305. Pence: .355. Obviously the Giants have more problems on offense than that — and not having Brandon Belt around lately has been a big problem — but what’s happening right now isn’t working, so why not make a change?

Long time NL umpire Dutch Rennert has died

MLB.com reports that long time umpire Dutch Rennert has died at the age of 88.

Rennert retired as a National League umpire after the 1992 season, so a lot of you didn’t get a chance to see him. But believe me, if you got a chance to see him in action, you’d remember him. He had one of the most distinct strikeout calls in history. He’d go turn to the side, go down on one knee, point with purpose and bellow “STRIKE . . . ONNNNNNEEEEE!”

It was quite the scene, man:

I used to love it when Rennert called a game I was watching on TV. I always knew the count.

Rest in Peace, Dutch. I cannot vouch for the peace of whoever is on the cloud next to yours, though.
