Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman left tonight’s game against the Braves with an injured thumb after jamming it diving back into second base on a pick-off attempt. It was initially believed to be a jammed thumb, but the Nationals just got some bad news. Per James Wagner of the Washington Post, Zimmerman fractured his thumb and will have to miss four to six weeks.
Anthony Rendon moved to third base to replace Zimmerman in the game and Danny Espinosa took over at second base. That will likely be the Nationals’ plan without Zimmerman going forward.
The Nationals are expected to call up infielder Zach Walters on Sunday, MLB.com’s William Ladson reports.
