Justin Verlander throws 54-pitch bullpen session

There had been some worry that Justin Verlander wouldn’t be ready for Opening Day following surgery to repair a torn “core muscle” in mid-January, but he threw for the first time last week and advanced to throwing a 54-pitch bullpen session yesterday.

Manager Brad Ausmus seemed pleased with how the mound session went and Verlander actually threw more pitches than he was scheduled for, which suggests he felt pretty good.

Jason Beck of MLB.com reports that Verlander’s spring training debut will be delayed, but barring setbacks he should have time to get ready for the regular season.
