Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports that the Indians and Justin Masterson have avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $9.7625 million contract. This was a last minute deal, as both sides were about to fly to Florida for their arbitration this afternoon.
Masterson requested $11.8 million and was offered $8.05 million from the Indians when arbitration figures were exchanged last month, so the two sides settled for a little under the midpoint. This is Masterson’s walk year, and thus his last time through the arbitration rodeo.
Last season the Indians Opening Day starter went 14-10 with a 3.45 ERA in 32 games.
