I don’t expect the GM of a major league team to actually say things like “well, if everything breaks right we can finish at .500.” But I do expect at least a bit of a nod to realism. Ruben Amaro isn’t into that:
“Listen, I don’t want to be foolhardy,” Amaro tells USA TODAY Sports, “but I do believe we have the talent to make a run at the National League East this year. And if we’re making a run at the National League East, it puts us in position to win the World Series.”
Personally I would’ve gone with something more vague about how “we expect to compete” or “we really like our ballclub.” But it is pretty adorable that he thinks the Phillies will make a run for the World Series this year.
