David Price would not consider an extension with the Mariners if he’s traded there

A David Price-to-the-Mariners trade just got a lot harder:

Rosenthal adds that this doesn’t necessarily end the trade speculation inasmuch as, even with no extension, Seattle would get two years worth of Price. Which, of course, would coincide with what are likely to be Robinson Cano’s two best years in Seattle. Really, the M’s need to go for it now, and they can go for it with Price, Cano and maybe another couple of pieces.

But it certainly means that the Mariners trading away top prospects for Price is off the table, as you shouldn’t rent a pitcher for two seasons at the cost of a potential ace you have under cheap team control for six.

The bigger story: no one of stature except Robinson Cano apparently wants to play in Seattle.

You can’t pick your family and no one knows that better than Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford. His sister Amy married Astros starter Gerrit Cole in November 2016, so the two players are brothers-in-law.

The two players have matched up against each other 18 times in the past, as Cole spent his first five seasons in the National League with the Pirates. Cole often won that battle, holding Crawford to four hits — all singles — in 18 plate appearances.

Crawford finally got the better of Cole on Tuesday night, hitting a line drive into the appropriately-named Crawford Boxes at Minute Maid Park for a two-run home run, cutting the Astros’ lead to 5-2.
