Per ESPN’s Jim Bowden, starter James Shields hasn’t discussed an extension with the Royals but is opened to staying in Kansas City beyond 2014 if the option should present itself. Shields will earn $13.5 million in the last year of a four-year extension signed in 2008 while with the Rays.

Shields, who turns 32 years old in December, came over to the Royals along with Wade Davis and Elliot Johnson on December 9 last year in the Wil Myers trade. He finished with a 3.15 ERA in a league-leading 228.2 innings of work, helping the Royals finish above .500 (86-76 to be exact) for the first time since 2003.
