Atlanta will demolish Turner Field after the Braves leave

So I guess the “carefully dismantling the ballpark and shipping the component parts to Oakland or Tampa Bay” option was shot down in committee:

Atlanta’s mayor said Tuesday that the city will demolish Turner Field after the Braves leave for a new stadium in the suburbs in 2017. Mayor Kasim Reed said at a news conference that the stadium will not be left vacant after the team starts playing at a new field in Cobb County in three years.

The mayor said that the site will be used for “one of the largest developments for middle-class people that the city has ever had.” So I guess that means there will be a Chili’s there or something.

Seriously, though: quick demolition and redevelopment is better than seeing a stadium rust and fall into disrepair while folks pitch pie-in-the-sky plans to repurpose a building built for a single purpose. Those schemes never ever work.

The Cubs will activate reliever Craig Kimbrel ahead of Thursday afternoon’s game against the Braves, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports.

Kimbrel, 31, ended a seven-month stint in free agency, agreeing to a three-year, $43 million contract with the Cubs earlier this month. He has made four minor league appearances, allowing one earned run on two hits and a walk with four strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.

With an aggregate 3.96 ERA entering Wednesday, the Cubs’ bullpen has been among the better bullpens in the league. Adding Kimbrel, one of the greatest closers of all-time, certainly can’t hurt and will give them some stability in save situations.
