Cubs ready to out-bid the Yankees for Joe Girardi

How serious are the Cubs about luring manager Joe Girardi away from the Yankees? According to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune they’re “willing to top whatever offer” he gets to stay in New York.

Gonzales speculates that will mean at least $5 million per season and generally speaking teams rarely win bidding wars with the Yankees, so Girardi (and his agent) must be thrilled right now.

Girardi is technically under contract until November 1 and the Yankees haven’t granted him permission to speak to teams before then, so this whole thing could take a while to play out.

On Sunday morning, the Padres planned to take a bus from their hotel in San Francisco to AT&T Park ahead of their afternoon game. The bus never showed. MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell reports that team director of player and staff services TJ Lasita flagged down an empty San Francisco tour bus, negotiated a rate, and got his players an impromptu ride to the ballpark.

The Padres’ Twitter account and Annie Heilbrunn of the San Diego Union-Tribune tweeted pictures and video:

The Padres and Giants are playing the rubber match of their three-game series this afternoon. The Padres will then travel to Arlington for a series with the Rangers. The Giants will welcome the Rockies.
