Following his start against the Pirates on August 22, Giants right-hander Matt Cain went on the disabled list for the first time in his nine-year career. He was hit in the right forearm by a Gaby Sanchez line drive leading off the fourth inning.
Cain has been enduring the worst season of his professional career, owning a 4.43 ERA in 156.1 innings. The Giants signed him to a six-year, $127.5 million contract extension in April last year and still owe him $87.5 million after the season.
Cain will be following up a stellar performance by Yusmeiro Petit last night, who was one strike away from becoming the 24th player in baseball history to throw a perfect game.
