Jonathan Broxton out six months after elbow surgery

Yesterday when the Reds announced that Jonathan Broxton needed elbow surgery manager Dusty Baker said that an official return timetable wouldn’t be known until doctors “get in there and see what’s wrong.”

Well, the doctors got in there today to repair a torn flexor mass and now the Reds say Broxton will be out for six months, which puts his status for spring training in question and could mean beginning next season on the disabled list.

Broxton was injured and ineffective in the first season of a three-year, $21 million deal, throwing 31 innings with a 4.11 ERA. And because the contract was structured to be cheaper this season he’s owed $7 million next season, $9 million in 2015, and $9 million or a $1 million buyout for 2016.
