Daisuke Matsuzaka to make Mets debut Friday against Tigers

The Mets signed right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka earlier today and they aren’t wasting any time putting him to work, as the team has announced that he’ll make his first start tomorrow night against the Tigers at Citi Field.

Matsuzaka, who turns 33 next month, was granted his release by the Indians earlier this week after he posted a 3.92 ERA and 95/39 K/BB ratio over 103 1/3 innings in 19 starts with Triple-A Columbus. Tomorrow will be his first start in the majors since last October 2. He had an 8.28 ERA in 11 starts with the Red Sox last season while opposing batters hit him at a .307 clip.

Expectations for Matsuzaka are pretty low at this point, but the Mets will need some warm bodies down the stretch with Jenrry Mejia and Jeremy Hefner sidelined with injuries and Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler eventually facing innings limits.

Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi reports that the Blue Jays are considering moving starter Jaime Garcia to the bullpen. If they go that route, Sam Gaviglio would start in Garcia’s place on Sunday against the Angels.

Garcia, 31, has struggled to a 6.16 ERA with a 56/31 K/BB ratio in 61 1/3 innings over 13 starts this season. Gaviglio, meanwhile, has a 3.75 ERA with 35 striekouts and 11 walks in 36 innings across six starts and two relief appearances for the Jays this year.

Garcia inked a one-year, $10 million contract with the Jays in February. The deal includes a club option for the 2019 season worth $10 million with a $2 million buyout.
