Well, this is strange. According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Nationals “almost immediately” placed outfielder David DeJesus on revocable waivers after they acquired him from the Cubs this afternoon.
Some have speculated that the waiver claim was a mistake, but that seems highly unlikely since a trade was agreed upon and DeJesus wasn’t simply dumped by the Cubs. Amanda Comak of the Washington Times speculates that perhaps they claimed/traded for him as an effort to keep him from getting to a rival team. Whatever the motivation was, the 60-64 Nationals now appear set to attempt to flip him elsewhere if possible.
DeJesus, 33, is still owed a little over $1 million this season while his contract includes a $6.5 million club option for 2014 or a $1.5 million buyout.
