Yankees general manager Brian Cashman went off the handle earlier this week following a seemingly harmless Tweet from Alex Rodriguez, so it only makes sense that the club is currently showing interest in free agent third baseman Ian Stewart. That’s right, ESPN’s Buster Olney hears that the two sides have been in touch about a potential minor league deal.
Of course, Stewart was released by the Cubs earlier this week after he completed a suspension for violating the “loyalty clause” in his contract by ranting about the organization on Twitter. The 28-year-old struggled through wrist injuries in 2011 and 2012 and was batting just .168/.286/.372 with five home runs through 40 games with Triple-A Iowa this season, so expectations are pretty low at this point, but there’s no harm in a minor league deal. Even if he doesn’t end up with the Yankees, he should find a new home relatively soon.
