Blue Jays sign Chien-Ming Wang

Making official what was reported last week, the Blue Jays have signed Chien-Ming Wang to a minor-league contract. He’s expected to be called up to start Tuesday against the White Sox.

Wang opted out of his minor-league deal with the Yankees because they had no intention of calling him up and the Blue Jays reached out with an opportunity to return to the majors.

John Lott of the Toronto Post reports that Wang’s contract is worth a prorated share of $500,000 and the Blue Jays have offered Wang “no guarantees beyond his first start.” Wang convinced Toronto to give him a chance by posting a 2.33 ERA in nine starts at Triple-A, but managing just 23 strikeouts in 58 innings there doesn’t bode well for his odds of sticking around.
