Ian Clarkin, a high school pitcher from San Diego who was the Yankees’ third first-round pick yesterday at No. 33 overall, said during a pre-draft interview that he “could not stand the Yankees” as a kid.

“I was actually in tears, I was so happy,” Clarkin said of being six years old in 2001 and watching Luis Gonzalez and the Diamondbacks beat the Yankees in the World Series.

Now he’s 18 years old and … well, Clarkin feels a whole lot differently:

Now I do love them, and my dad’s going to have to learn to love them, too. They’re the most historic organization, and I am looking forward to it. There’s proof in the pudding, and I’m excited for it.

Funny how that works.
