Marlins designate Jon Rauch for assignment

The Marlins signed veteran reliever Jon Rauch to a one-year, $1 million contract over the winter, but he has been designated for assignment after making just 15 appearances with the club. Duane Below has been called up from Triple-A New Orleans to replace him on the active roster.

Rauch has really struggled in the early part of the season, posting a 7.56 ERA in 16 2/3 innings to go along with a 15/7 K/BB ratio. The 34-year-old gave up two runs on four hits and a walk over one inning of work in last night’s loss to the Diamondbacks.

Rauch owns a 3.90 ERA over 11 seasons in the majors and posted a 3.59 ERA in 73 appearances with the Mets last season, so it shouldn’t be long before the 6-foot-11 right-hander gets an opportunity elsewhere.

As expected, Jose Altuve will serve as the designated hitter for Game 3 of the ALCS against the Red Sox this afternoon.

Altuve has been bothered by a right knee injury, so A.J. Hinch has chosen to give his legs a bit of a breather. In his place at the keystone will be Marwin Gonzalez, putting Tony Kemp in left field. Brian McCann is behind the plate.

For Boston, a lefty on the mound means that Rafael Devers will sit in favor of Eduardo Nunez at third base while Christian Vazquez will do the catching.
