Mariners officially release Jon Garland

The Mariners, auditioning more than a handful of players for spots at the back of the starting rotation, announced yesterday they would not be giving one of those valuable spots to veteran right-hander Jon Garland. His release was a mere formality. Per the team’s official Twitter, they also released former power threat Mike Jacobs:

There will be some interest in Garland by teams with rotation problems of their own. For example, Troy Renck tweeted about the Rockies’ “lukewarm” interest, but were not convinced he can stay healthy for an entire season.

Garland last pitched in the Majors in 2011, racking up just 54 innings before succumbing to a right shoulder injury which required surgery.

The Atlanta Braves have signed right-hander Josh Tomlin to a minor league contract with an invitation to the team’s major league camp.

The 34-year-old Tomlin, who was released by Milwaukee on Wednesday, had a 6.14 ERA in 32 games, including nine starts, with Cleveland in 2018. Tomlin was 61-53 with a 4.77 ERA in nine seasons with the Indians.

Tomlin was 2-1 with a 4.80 ERA in five games with the Brewers this spring after joining the team on a minor league deal.
