Marlon Byrd will retire if he doesn’t make the Mets

Marlon Byrd is pretty self-aware. He knows that if he can’t make a team with an outfield as thin as the Mets, baseball has told him something important about where he stands. He tells the New York Post that he’s likely to retire if the Mets cut him:

“I kind of look at it as a last chance,” Byrd said. “If I don’t make this team, I don’t see many other chances in baseball. That’s the way I’m playing, like it is my last chance.”

His offense has cratered and last year he got popped with a 50-game suspension for PEDs. He’s staring the end in the place.
