Trout catches grouper

You know it’s the offseason because some player’s girlfriend tweeted something interesting and I’m running with it. From the Twitter feed of Mike Trout’s girlfriend, Jessica Cox:

From a USA Today story describing the fish:

Trout, his girlfriend and his brother scored big this weekend in Key West, Fla., reeling in a grouper they claim is 500 or 550 pounds, depending on who’s describing the massive catch.

When old school baseball writers are describing the fish Mike Trout caught they claim it was only 30 pounds and that Miguel Cabrera caught a bigger one. ¬†In contrast, sabermetric writers describe it as a “great¬†Leviathan,” and that “one of the wild suggestings linked with the Great Grouper was the unearthly conceit that it was ubiquitous; that he had actually been encountered in opposite latitudes at one and the same instant of time.”

Mets lose Robinson Can√≥, Jeff McNeil to injured list

As Bill wrote last night, Robinson Can√≥ — bashed for his lack of hustle just a few days ago — busted it out of the box last night and strained his hamstring. That has now landed him on the injured list. Adeiny Hechavarria took over at second base after Cano’s last night and is starting there in today’s game versus the Nationals. No timetable has been given for Can√≥, but one usually misses at least a couple of weeks with hamstring pulls, sometimes longer.

Also going on the shelf for the Mets is Jeff McNeil, who hurt his hamstring on Tuesday. J.D. Davis will cover for him until he comes back. Michael Conforto is the next regular outfielder who should return to the fold. He has still not been given an offical comeback date after hitting the injured list with a concussion, but it was reported yesterday that he has been symptom free for a few days, which is a good sign.
