Jose Lopez signs with Japanese team for $911,000

Making official what was reported last week, Jose Lopez has signed a one-year deal with the Yomiuri Giants in Japan.

According to the Associated Press he’ll get $911,000, which is less than most former major leaguers heading to Japan typically receive and suggests Lopez couldn’t find anything more than a minor-league deal in America.

And that makes sense, because despite some early hope that he’d develop into an impact player (and an odd All-Star appearance in 2006) Lopez has been pretty terrible for years now, hitting .236 with a .615 OPS during the past three seasons.

Yankees to trade Sonny Gray soon

Andy Martino of SNY reports that the Yankees “have multiple offers on the table” for Sonny Gray and appear close to trading him.

Probably best for everyone. Gray posted a 4.90 ERA in 2018 and drew the ire of basically everyone in the Yankee universe, but there does not seem to be anything physically wrong with him and you have to figure a change of scenery would do him good.

Where he goes is anyone’s guess — Martino says there are “approximately 11” teams interested — but we’ll find out soon enough.
