Blue Jays hoping 42-year-old Darren Oliver will change his mind about retiring

Despite posting a 2.06 ERA in 57 innings this year and a sub-3.00 ERA in each of the past five seasons Darren Oliver is still leaning toward retirement at age 42.

Oliver first said that two months ago, although Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports that the Blue Jays are “holding out hope that will change in the coming weeks” and don’t expect “a final decision” from the left-handed reliever until January.

Toronto holds a $3 million option on Oliver for 2013 that has already been exercised, but Chisholm speculates that there’s some chance he could request a trade to a team closer to his home in Texas.
