Report: the Angels are unlikely to sign Zack Greinke

Los Angeles Dodgers, open your checkbooks. Danny Knobler reports:

The Angels, once considered the favorite to keep free-agent pitcher Zack Greinke, are now unlikely to sign him, according to sources.

The issue is money, it seems, as Knobler reports that the Angels don’t want to go to the top of the market where Greinke seems to be heading.

Of course there was also no indication last year at this time that the Angels would go top dollar for Albert Pujols, but they did, and in every other year lots of teams put themselves in play for free agents at the Winter Meetings or soon thereafter.  The point: don’t bank on the Angels being out of it.

Catcher Brayan Peña announced his retirement on Monday evening via his Twitter account:

Peña, 36, signed a minor league contract with the Tigers in January but the club ended up going with catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia for their Triple-A roster.

Peña spent parts of 12 seasons in the majors with the Braves, Royals, Tigers, Reds, and Cardinals from 2005-16. He hit .259/.299/.351 in 1,950 plate appearances.

With his playing days behind him, Peña will transition into coaching. He will manage one of the Tigers’ Gulf Coast League teams, George Sipple of the Free Press reports.
