Chris Carpenter moves “in the right direction” with brief mound session

Chris Carpenter tested his injured right shoulder yesterday by throwing off a mound for the first time since being shut down during spring training.

Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch reports that Carpenter threw 26 pitches, all of them fastballs, and was working at “slightly less than full effort.”

Carpenter called it “a nice move in the right direction” while adding that he’s basically where he would be at the beginning of spring training in terms of building up arm strength. In other words, he’s still a long way from potentially rejoining the Cardinals’ rotation.
