Jason Bay cleared for baseball activities, but not close to return from fractured rib

Three weeks ago Jason Bay suffered a non-displaced rib fracture that came with a 3-6 week recovery timetable and the Mets left fielder has now been cleared to resume baseball activities after being examined by team doctors yesterday.

There’s still no specific timetable for his return and Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports that Bay will continue to rehab at the Mets’ spring training complex in Florida because he “has done little more than ride a stationary bike and elliptical machine since” the injury.

According to DiComo the best-case scenario for his return is “late May” and right now Bay explained that his ribs are about 80 percent healthy and to the point that “all the day-to-day stuff doesn’t bother me.”

Kirk Nieuwenhuis has been the primary left fielder in Bay’s place and the 24-year-old rookie has done a very nice job, hitting .302 with two homers and an .801 OPS in 34 total games.
