Darnell McDonald is the latest injured Red Sox outfielder, joining Jacoby Ellsbury, Carl Crawford, Jason Repko, and Ryan Kalish on the disabled list with an oblique strain.
McDonald took the mound as a pitcher on May 6, but insisted yesterday that the outing had nothing to do with his injury and instead he’s “been trying to battle through it for a while.”
It shows in his numbers, as McDonald hit just .179 with a .634 OPS in 65 plate appearances. Oh, and he also coughed up three runs in that one-inning relief appearance.
Boston called up 27-year-old career minor leaguer Mauro Gomez to take McDonald’s spot on the roster after the journeyman hit .294 with 10 homers and a .610 slugging percentage in 34 games at Triple-A.
