Dodgers activate Ronald Belisario from restricted list following drug suspension

The Dodgers announced earlier this evening that they have activated Ronald Belisario from the restricted list. Mike MacDougal was designated for assignment in a corresponding roster move.

Belisario was eligible to return after completing a 25-game suspension for violating MLB’s drug policy. The 29-year-old right-hander tested positive for cocaine, a drug he claims he only used once.

Belisario was an asset in the Dodgers’ bullpen as a rookie back in 2009, posting a 2.04 ERA and 64/29 K/BB ratio over 70 2/3 innings, but he had a 5.04 ERA in 55 innings in 2010 and missed two months during the season in order to receive treatment for a substance-abuse problem. He spent all of last season on the restricted list after failing to secure a work visa in his native Venezuela.

MacDougal rode a 2.05 ERA last year into a guaranteed $1 million deal this offseason, but he has an ugly 7.94 ERA and 4/6 K/BB ratio across 5 2/3 innings this season.

White Sox starter Iván Nova was able to escape a jam in the third inning of Wednesday night’s game against the Astros with the help of a triple play. Nova had allowed a leadoff double to Tony Kemp, then hit Robinson Chirinos with a pitch to put runners on first and second base with no outs. Facing Jake Marisnick in a 1-1 count, Nova threw a 94 MPH fastball that Marisnick sharply grounded to Yoán Moncada right at the third base bag. Moncada quickly fired the ball to Yolmer Sánchez at second base, then Sánchez whipped the ball to José Abreu at first base just ahead of a lunging Marisnick to complete the triple-killing.

According to Baseball Almanac, it’s the 718th known triple play dating back to 1876. The last time the White Sox turned a triple play was 2016. They turned three triple plays that season, amusingly. The Astros have been victimized by two of the last three triple plays, having also hit into one on April 19 last year against the Mariners.
