Tsuyoshi Wada needs Tommy John surgery

The Orioles signed Tsuyoshi Wada to a a two-year, $8.15 million contract over the winter. Then he couldn’t make it out of spring training due to elbow soreness, and since then has pitched a grand total of one inning of minor league ball.

But now his year — and most of next, I’d wager — is over: he’s going to have Tommy John surgery.

He was given a physical by the same doctor who diagnosed the need for Tommy John — Lewis Yocum — before signing with Baltimore, so one can assume that this is a case of a freak occurrence in limited spring work, not a case of Wada being damaged goods.

Not that that will make Baltimore feel better.
