Dodgers place Matt Guerrier on DL with elbow tendinitis

Matt Guerrier has been one of baseball’s most durable relievers for the past seven years, averaging 65 appearances and 74 innings per season, but now at age 33 he’s on the disabled list.

Guerrier was diagnosed with elbow tendinitis and the Dodgers shelved him while calling up left-hander Michael Antonini from Triple-A, where he had been starting games.

Don Mattingly revealed to Tony Jackson of ESPN Los Angeles that Guerrier has been pitching through elbow pain all season, and while his 2.70 ERA looks nice he had more walks (5) than strikeouts (4) in 6.2 innings.

He was given a platelet-rich plasma injection yesterday and will be eligible to return on May 4. As part of a three-year deal signed last offseason Guerrier is making $3.75 million this season and is owed another $3.75 million for 2013.

Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi reports that the Blue Jays are considering moving starter Jaime Garcia to the bullpen. If they go that route, Sam Gaviglio would start in Garcia’s place on Sunday against the Angels.

Garcia, 31, has struggled to a 6.16 ERA with a 56/31 K/BB ratio in 61 1/3 innings over 13 starts this season. Gaviglio, meanwhile, has a 3.75 ERA with 35 striekouts and 11 walks in 36 innings across six starts and two relief appearances for the Jays this year.

Garcia inked a one-year, $10 million contract with the Jays in February. The deal includes a club option for the 2019 season worth $10 million with a $2 million buyout.
