Tom Gorzelanny took one for the team (and on the chin)

Sometimes a relief appearance is more about soaking up innings than actually preventing runs, which Tom Gorzelanny found out the hard way last night.

Gorzelanny entered the game in the sixth inning following an abbreviated Edwin Jackson start and the first seven Astros batters he faced went single, fielder’s choice, single, single, single, single, double.

At that point a 5-4 deficit had grown to a 10-4 deficit and the game was all but over despite the fact that Gorzelanny had recorded just one out, but instead of removing him from the mess manager Davey Johnson left him in.

And then afterward he explained the move to Gene Wang of the Washington Post:

Bullpen’s been pretty taxed pretty much all year. It wasn’t the case where I was going to throw the kitchen sink at them trying to win that ballgame. I want to go into the division series against Miami without an overburdened pen so Gorzo kind of hand to take it on the chin. That happens in this game.

Gorzelanny escaped the inning without further damage and then allowed “only” one more run in the next frame, so he avoided ruining his ERA for the entire season and simply saw it grow from 0.00 to 7.36 in the span of 46 pitches.

SAN DIEGO — Veteran closer Kenley Jansen and the Boston Red Sox have agreed to a two-year, $32 million deal, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the agreement was pending a physical.

The 35-year-old Jansen went 5-2 with a 3.38 ERA in 64 innings for Atlanta this year. The three-time All-Star led the National League with 41 saves, helping the Braves win the NL East title.

Boston is looking to bounce back after it finished last in the AL East this season with a 78-84 record. The Red Sox went 92-70 in 2021 and lost to Houston in the AL Championship Series.

Jansen spent his first 12 seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, winning a World Series title in 2020. The right-hander signed a $16 million, one-year contract with Atlanta in March.

Jansen has a 2.46 career ERA. He was an All-Star in 2016-2018.

His 391 career saves are the second-most among active players (behind Craig Kimbrel‘s 394) and eighth all time.
