Melvin Mora isn’t retired, but did turn down the Rangers

Melvin Mora didn’t play after being released by the Diamondbacks in June and was said to be retiring in December, but then changed his mind a few weeks ago and is now looking for a new team at age 40.

However, he apparently wasn’t willing to play in Texas.

Gerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News passes along an interview Mora did with the Venezuelan newspaper El Universal in which he talked about turning down an offer from the Rangers because he wants to play for a team closer to his home in Baltimore.

Considering spring training starts in less than two weeks and Mora is a 40-year-old who hit .228 with a .520 OPS before getting released last season he’s seemingly going against the whole beggars can’t be choosers thing. Texas apparently offered him a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training, which is almost surely as good as he’ll do anywhere else.
