Yankees sign Manny Delcarmen to minor-league deal

Manny Delcarmen didn’t pitch in the majors last year, spending the entire season at Triple-A, and now the 29-year-old reliever will try to make it back to the big leagues with the Yankees.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that Delcarmen has agreed to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training, where he’ll try to win a middle relief job.

Delcarmen was an excellent setup man for the Red Sox in 2007 and 2008, but his velocity and strikeout totals dipped after that and he has a combined 4.74 ERA and 82/66 K/BB ratio in 112 innings since. And that doesn’t include last season’s ugly 5.59 ERA in 39 innings at Triple-A.

Andy Martino of SNY TV reports that the Mets “have gotten to the point of exchanging names with teams” in trade talks for closer Jeurys Familia. He says that nothing is imminent, but that we should expect a Familia trade “well before the deadline.”

Familia has 17 saves in 29 appearances, a 2.88 ERA and a 43/14 K/BB ratio over 40.2 innings this season.
